Dear AP Scholar,
If you're reading this, you got the QR code and manilla folder from Mrs. Robinson for the summer homework! yay!
Here is everything you need to know to complete the summer reading!! You got this! the first thing you'll need to do is review the PDF in this blog post - download it, save it somewhere safe where you can access it, bookmark this site! I also recommend that you subscribe to posts so you'll be notified by email any time I post something.
This blog post is marked READ ME FIRST! Make sure you read the other posts on this site as well!
First, I’m so glad you have chosen to take AP Language and Composition this coming year. As an AP class, it is faster-paced and more rigorous, so getting started in the summer is a great way to prepare for class in the fall. As you’ll quickly realize, everything is an argument. This class is all about having opinions and then learning to back them up with evidence and commentary. You’ll write a lot, so get ready to grow into a strong writer who can see the world through a critical eye and join what we call “the discourse community” - a world of thinkers, writers, authors, analysts, and researchers who are already talking about issues that affect you, right where you are in high school.
I can’t wait to hear what you have to say! Welcome to the discourse community. :)
-Ms. Mohr
Here are a few checklist items for you to get ready for this year:
Review the list of books included in the packet attached. You have a choice of 5 books - you only need to read one. They vary in length and subject matter but are generally all the same amount of thinking, writing, and analysis work. It is your responsibility to get a copy - I included amazon links on a separate post that you can review or you can check Half Price Books, Thriftbooks, etc. (there are rewards for Thriftbooks if you are already a reader, btw! 🙂) I strongly encourage you to annotate and write in it or use sticky notes to keep track of notes for discussion. You will need to bring it with you the first day/week of class.
When you have selected a book, please EMAIL me what book you chose. Keep my email handy in case you have questions about the assignments or if there is something I can help with. You can reach me at meredith.mohr@staffordmsd.org.
You must complete the tasks for the summer reading assignment in its entirety. This includes the cover of the folder, the blackout poem, the annotated passage, and the dialectic journal and fully reading and understanding all of the structures/concepts/vocabulary. Doing this now will set you up for the year well, trust me! You may write or type. Please print and assemble your folder pieces if you type. Be sure to respond to each task thoroughly and completely, as your responses will count as a major grade for the first marking period. You should make sure your ideas are both organized and presented clearly and thoroughly. Please remember that this is an AP class, so I expect well-developed and thoughtful responses to each task. If you pace yourself over the summer, you should easily be able to read through your selected book.
Note: it is expected that you complete your summer assignments on your own. Put forth your best effort and complete all of what is detailed below. It is unacceptable to come in with incomplete work and claim “I didn’t get it.”
If you have any questions, please email me at meredith.mohr@staffordmsd.org. I am here to help you!
